How You Can Reduce Your Wardrobe's Impact on Earth's Resources

Nanna/Nana Technology

Back in the days when our Nanna's/Nana's were young, they all had much smaller eco-footprints than that of today so they must have been doing something right, right!

To this day most of our Nanna's/Nana's are fond of keeping their old clothes (whether they wear them or not) and whilst 'granny chic' may not be the current season's "look", we can still take a note from their books and learn to be a little more resourceful with what we already have.

I like to call it Nanna/Nana Technology.

So that got me thinking and I wondered "How can I reduce the impact of my wardrobe - whether it be spending on new clothes or recycling/reusing my old clothes?"

The following list is what I have come up with to help me reduce my own eco-footprint and become more resourceful.

How You Can Be Resourceful

DONATE YOUR OLD CLOTHES TO CHARITY

Spend time actually going through your wardrobe and sorting out what you still want or need from those that you do not.

Give your unwanted clothes to Charity Thrift/Op Shops and by doing so they will have a new lease of life as somebody else will get to wear it and most importantly they will not end up on a landfill refuse site.

BE CREATIVE and REVAMP/REWORK/REINVENT YOUR EXISTING CLOTHING

Instead of discarding all of your 'old stuff' get your creative juices flowing and make something new for you to wear out of it.

ReInvent your old clothes into new clothes and you'll be making one-off pieces that only you will have the pleasure of owning.

Do what you Nanna/Nana would have done and turn something old into something new by unstitching a panel and sewing in a new piece of fabric into the existing garment or pulling together bits and pieces from other garments to make something completely new.

You could also make accessories such as headband, necklaces, bangles, brooches, rings, etc from the fabrics and attachments (buttons, zips, etc).

Be Resourceful and Responsible

BUY VINTAGE and/or RETRO CLOTHING FROM YESTERYEAR

You will be amazed at what you can find in Charity Thrift/Op Shops if you really take the time to look properly!

You will have fabulous 'street cred' with a wardrobe full off recycled clothing and the planet will love you too.

IF YOU MUST BUY NEW CLOTHES THEN BUY ORGANIC CLOTHING

Be an eco-friendly 'green consumer' by buying clothing made from organically grown fabric materials such as bamboo, cotton and hemp.

They are becoming easier to find in the shops as more consumers demand them.

Go on and make time to clear out your own wardrobe.

It really is up to you and your imagination and who knows from this new-found pastime of yours you could possibly end up starting your own Clothing ReInvention business and be the next big 'fashionista diva' and help yourself and others be 'sustainably stylish' in the process.

Thanks for your comment Erik.

The only problem with shopping at Thrift Stores/Op Shops is having the time to sift through the clothing and other items for sale.

Some days you strike out and other days it feels like Christmas ... it's just a matter of luck and spare-time!

Good idea. Thrift stores are useful places to buy from and donate to. Many of them support charities, so that's all the better.
