Simple Tips On How To Create A Family Budget

Creating a Family Budget is really not that hard, boring maybe, but it is all about being organised and setting yourself realistic goals.

In these times of economic uncertainty it sure pays to be able to budget the family's bank account.

Even the families that are doing it tough managing to make ends meet on only one income need to be able to budget their money to stretch the dollar even further.

Smart Budgeting is not just about being frugal with your money but more about curtailing wasteful spending.

Importance Of Having A Family Budget

Organising a family budget may seem to be an overwhelming task to begin with, but with a little helpful advice and setting yourself realistic goals, it can easily be achieved.

By having a Family Budget and using it on a regular basis, you will be teaching your children how to be 'money wise' and not 'money wasteful' and the earlier they learn how to save, the better off they will be.

When I need to create my own Family Budget I usually refer to a list like the one below:

  1. Write down all sources of income.
  2. Keep track of all expenses for a month or so. Keep all of your receipts.
  3. Add up your monthly expenses. Be sure to include all bills and everyday expenses such as lunch money and transportation costs.
  4. Talk to the family about ways that you can reduce expenditure. Getting input from other family members will help you determine which expenses are necessary and which ones could be cut down or eliminated.
  5. Estimate how much you can save on regular expenses and cut out the unnecessary items out from the budget. Then re-figure your budget to see where you stand.
  6. If you end up with a surplus, allocate a portion of it to savings. If you're in the red, go back and rework the budget until you have more income than expenses.

Remember that the main reason that family budgets often fail is because they are just not realistic and not easy to stick to.

Be Realistic

It is great to be able to cut down on expenses, but sometimes we tend to go too far.

For example, cutting entertainment out of the budget completely might look good on paper, but is not at all realistic as we all need a little diversion every now and then.

Instead of cutting such things out of the budget completely, consider finding ways to lower the cost.

Maybe you are used to going out to dinner and watching a movie at a cinema complex as a family once or twice a month but financial restraints make it no longer a viable outing - rather than despair over what you once had simply have a "Family Treat Night" at home - buy your own "treats" and eat in-house and rent a new release movie on Video/DVD instead.

This activity would be noticeably cheaper than going out on the town and think about the "quality time" you will be spending together as a family within the confines of your own home.

Plan For That Rainy Day

By creating a family budget it will help you to keep spending under control thereby leaving more money for you to be able to pay off your debts and save for future goals.

In order for you to succeed it will require close monitoring of your income and by doing so your efforts will be rewarded in the long run with less financial stress and more money in your bank account to enjoy with the family.

The mantra in my own household is -

"Put in the effort and reap the rewards".

It really is as simple as that!

So go on, give it a go, it's really not as hard as you might think.
