FM/FMS - When Your Pain Is All Over Your Body Except For 'In Your Head'!

Fibromyalgia is a common, but poorly understood condition. Fibromyalgia or FM/FMS refers to a syndrome - a group of symptoms and signs previously referred to as Fibrositis.

Fibromyalgia (FM/FMS) is often called the "invisible disease" because outwardly fibromyalgia sufferers/patients may look perfectly healthy but internally they may have intense pain throughout their bodies, they may be constantly fatigued and weak, they may be dizzy, confused, lacking sleep, suffering digestive disorders and generally living a poor quality of life.

The cause of Fibromyalgia is unknown.

It remains a controversial diagnosis although the majority of Doctors (Rheumatologists) now accept the reality of this condition.

There is no known cure for Fibromyalgia but there are ways to treat the symptoms to improve your quality of life.

Fibromyalgia pain is not all in the person's/patients' heads as we are lead to believe. It does not appear to simply a psychological disease, although many patients do become depressed.

There are abnormalities of various factors in the blood and the fluid around the brain which suggest that the body's nervous system has lost some of its ability to properly cope with modestly uncomfortable events.

Unlike hypochondriacs, most Fibromyalgia sufferers WANT TO GET WELL, the depression that occurs is usually as a result of Acute/Chronic Pain and Tiredness and they do not appear to be malingers.

WHAT IS FIBROMYALGIA (FM/FMS)?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain in your muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as fatigue and multiple tender points - places on your body where slight pressure causes pain.

The most common symptoms are sleep disturbance, widespread pain, tiredness and morning stiffness.

Patients will complain of pain arising from their joints, more commonly from their muscles and the majority of patients will have pain arising from both joints and muscles.

The pain of Fibromyalgia is often made worse by extreme changes in the weather, humidity, cold/damp weather, stress and lack of sleep/tiredness.

Fibromyalgia and Pain Management Methods

The management of Fibromyalgia is extremely difficult and there is 'no quick fix'.

Drug treatment probably has only a minor role. The usual anti-inflammatory drugs given to arthritis patients are not normally effective. Low dose anti-depressant drugs may be helpful initially but should not be used as a long-term remedy.

Fibromyalgia can occur in conjunction with other conditions such as Arthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Arthralgia, Chronic Fatigue (CF), Irritable Bowel (IBS), etc.

Although Fibromyalgia can be a difficult condition to live with, it is not dangerous and does not ultimately impair the function of joints, muscles or other body tissues and is not crippling like some other conditions that Rheumatologists see.

Psychological counselling can be helpful and a gentle Exercise program including walking, hydrotherapy and gentle aerobic exercise is extremely useful.

My personal story is one of getting on and off the Fibromyalgia treadmill with one Doctor saying yes you have it and others saying no you do not but you have such and such. The most difficult part of dealing and coping with an 'invisible condition' is just that ... it is INVISIBLE to every one except for the person searching for answers to why they are in pain.

Apparently according to my latest medical tests I am no longer a Fibromyalgia sufferer but have another non-related Blood/Bone condition which is the cause behind my pain. Funny thing is though I still wake up most mornings feeling more tired than when I went to bed even though I have had a relatively decent night's sleep and my body is still unable to spring out of bed rejuvenated from that night's sleep as it is painfully stiff and needs 'stretching time' before I venture out to face a new day!

I had a funny moment with my husband the other morning when upon rising I motioned my way up the hallway of our house 'arring and orring' at this and that hurting me as I was walking ... he said to me cheekily "you are the only person I know who wakes up 'injured', you are creaking louder than this old house does" ... at first I told him to "sod-off" but then I laughed because although he was stating the obvious ... he was actually telling the truth!

Fibromyalgia is not a nice problem to be dealing with ... it is very REAL and should be treated with the utmost respect.

christine, you are very welcome and many thanks for leaving a comment.

It really does take a Fibromyalgic/Fibromite to truly understand what it is that a fellow sufferer is going through.

As long as you stay true to yourself the rest (including what other people think/say) will fade into insignificance. :-)

I am so thankful for the comments and the article explaining fibromyalgia. I know now i am not crazy. I have heard some of the same comments--but you look good,or you need to get out more. I have been treated for the pain for 15 yrs. Some days,okay-most of them not. Thanks so very much.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment trolectio.

Fibromyalgia is a very misunderstood illness whether it is 'invisible' or not!

trolectio 7 months ago

This is interesting because this is an invisible disease but I can recommend you to go to xlpharmacy because I've gone there and I gotten excellent results.

Thanks for commenting MummyTales.

The life of a Fibromyalgic/Fibromite can be a very lonely one especially when no one is listening.

Fortunately for me I have a very supportive and understanding husband - when we met I was in the depths of deepest despair coping with this so-called there's nothing wrong with you it's all in your head 'mystery illness' and 19 years later he is still putting up with me. :-)

It really does take another person going through what you and I go through to really and truly understand what life is like. It is like I always say to the Doc's - 'I am not seeking attention, who in their right mind wants to be in constant pain, but just a little understanding and appreciation would be nice'.

Extremely good hub, it is a condition so debilitating and made all the worse because others can't see it so they don't understand! It is not in our head!! Voted Up and useful

Thanks ladies for your lovely comments.

JLSB, I cannot take credit for the video as I found it amongst many others on Fibromyalgia on Youtube but it is one of the better ones that sums up what it is like to have Fibromyalgia. I enjoyed reading your own personal story when I was online last night.

Teresa, I hope that it is just a matter of time for your husband to eventually understand what you are going through. I've had FM for 18+ years on and off and i'm still having to justify it (not to my husband or children though).

Having to constantly JUSTIFY is my major peeve about Fibromyalgia ... why won't people just believe and accept it or is it because it is INVISIBLE and what the eye cannot see the eye cannot believe. Could you imagine FM sufferers getting about wrapped in bandages from head to foot (or worst still plaster casts) just to say to the non-believers ... so do you think that i'm still making it up!!!

I really do look forward to the day when Fibromyalgia is accepted and that will only come with people like us telling the world our stories.

Hopefully you ladies will have a relatively pain-free day.

This is a very very good hub. I think it explains it very well. I just wish people who do not have Fibromyalgia would read these hubs. Not just the ones that do have it. I know we all try to stick together as we know what each other goes through. Because we understand.

I tried to watch your video and couldn't get my computer to co-operate. I will try again later. I am glad some one understands how to do this this of thing. I am not very computer smart. But this is a great hub. Keep up the good work. Maybe if we publish enough hubs more people with out fibromyalgia will start to read them.

Wow your video made me cry. I know there are many people who suffer with this and I am only one. The hardest part for me is missing out on what my young children are doing and saying every day. Lately I can't get out of bed long enough to enjoy any thing and my husband doesn't understand. He calls me lazy and that just makes it all worse. I hope some day he will understand.

Judy, thank you for your kind words. It really does means the world to me that I am able to help out wherever I possibly can (even if it is only through 'words').

It was actually my husband's idea for me to start writing about Chronic Pain/FMS so i'll pass on some credit his way as well. :-)

Just remember that you are not alone and that there are plenty of people just like me who are more than willing to help out when the going gets tough.

I wish you many pain-free days ahead.

This is the best description that I have ever read on Fibromyalgia. It sure has helped me a lot knowing that others are suffering with the same things I am and it is not just in my head. Thank you and what an awesome powerful video. Thank you and God Bless You.
